Extreme heat from the blazes melted plastic storm drains underground, creating the risk of collapse or slides with the upcoming rains. Fire apparently ignited the exposed end of the 24-inch diameter pipe and continued burning underground about 250 feet. The ground gave way, leaving a 7-foot deep by 4-foot wide trench.
