Cellular Solution
An Immense Yet Efficient Urban Design Project at Lake Merritt, California
In 2010, the City of Oakland, California took on an enormous urban design project at Lake Merritt - reconstructing the 12-lane expressway across the 12th Street dam into a six-lane boulevard - with more pedestrian and transportation access.
In order to do so, the City replaced the unstable soil with a cement solution called lightweight cellular concrete.
This technique replaced aggregates with air bubbles, making it low-density and easily pump-able while remaining strong and resilient, and saving the City money, resources, and construction time.
